Casting Aubrey Plaza in Mystery Team

Question: Aubrey Plaza isn't a member of Derrick Comedy. How did you go about casting her? She hadn't really been in anything at the time you made this, but Mystery Team is coming out at a time when she is really taking off with her performances in Parks and Recreation, and Funny People.

Dan Eckman: Actually, I knew Aubrey Plaza back in film school. She was in film school at the time. I had a weird, creepy roommate. And he stalked her. I knew her. She was a comedian around the scene. When we auditioned for Mystery Team, she really wanted the part. I was dead set against casting a comedian. I thought it was the one serious role in the film, and that it should be done by a serious actress. But everyone they brought in was too serious in a bad way. Aubrey was always great. We made her audition three or four times, and she kept nailing it. While we were on the set, my brother taped her audition for Funny People. They did that in the Lumber Yard. She got the part, and we thought, "That was the best decision we ever made in our entire lives." She is amazing in everything. And she deserves everything that is coming to her. When we took this film to Sundance, most of the cast was unknowns. Now a lot of them are emerging. The cast is moving on up. It's hilarious. We can't take credit for it, either. We are just riding the wave. Its not like Mystery Team came out, and then they got famous from that. We are benefiting from the fact that these guys are all very talented, and now people can see them here.

Aubrey Plaza in The Prom Date (with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett)

Hahahahaha.

Orbit Dirty Shorts presents, 'The Prom Date' - the first of a new web content series from Orbit gum that highlights unusually dirty situations and how Orbit cleans it up. In 'The Prom Date' see what happens when Jason Bateman and Will Arnett take on the dirty world of student and teacher dating - and how the parents of the student involved react.

Will Arnett and Jason Bateman unveiled the first digital short from their production company DumbDumb and Ben Silverman’s Electus.

“The Prom Date,” starring Arnett, Bateman, Rachael Harris, and Aubrey Plaza, tells the story of two parents (Bateman and Harris) getting their daughter ready for her senior prom. Of course, she’s not going with just some boy, she’s going with Skip, her soulmate, a word that strikes fear in the hearts of many a parent. Bateman’s wary of Skip’s intentions, commenting on how boys these days “know how to act all polite, and before you know it they’ve got their Facebook all up in your Twitter.”

=======================

Okay, so here's the video we were talking about earlier (that Aubrey mentioned). This is hilarious! They're all at the top of their games, and I have to say that I think this is one of the best commercials ever. It's funny, it keeps reminding you of the product in ways that you don't mind (putting the product into the plot), and it features known actors.

It's really a win win. Jason and Will make some money for their online commercial company, Orbit gets eyes on their product, and the actors inject new life into their careers because it's such a hilarious and well-viewed short (currently over 300,000 on two YT vids, and it's pretty new).

So "get his facebook all up in your twitter" is a great line. So is "I once had a soulmate... My sole purpose was to mate with her." And Justin Bateman saying "I had a soulmate once..." turning to his wife, "Did you meet Karen?" Classic!!!

So I think Jason Bateman is the true humor here, but Will's sleezeball is funny in its own way as well.

And finally, It Builds Character found a great catch (in the comments). I was wondering why they said they were out of gum when they clearly were not, and that became a bit of a side plot when Jason found the last piece of gum. So why didn't he just take one from the pack to give Will?

Basically, the mom and dad (Jason and Rachael) didn't put the gum in their mouths yet when they told Will that they were out. That's significant, because they were not yet transformed into their moral selves. So that's why they lied and said they were out of gum. They didn't want to share their gum with the man they hated. But after they chewed their gum, they became moral, and thus, Jason wanted to give Will that piece of gum (probably not understanding the bonus side effect, that Will would also then become moral with their daughter).

Thanks to It Builds Character for the catch!

Aubrey Plaza - wtf on MTV Movie Awards

Is Aubrey Plaza's dirty mouth going to help MTV get tweets?

Orbit will be called upon to clean up a few dirty mouths during the June 6 telecast. Reprising its role as the official sponsor of the Best WTF Moment -- in a nod to the texting acronym, the award honors the most jaw-dropping scene from a recent theatrical -- the Wrigley gum brand will be incorporated into banter between presenters Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick.

In keeping with Orbit's tag ("Dirty mouth? Clean it up!"), the actresses will present the WTF hardware with a requisite smattering of bleeped-out profanities.

As the bit plays out, both network and sponsor hope viewers will take it to the tweets, providing a real-time metacommentary on the event, the brand and the WTF honoree. (The smart money's on Ken Jeong for his naked crowbar assault in The Hangover.)

Hosted by Aziz Ansari (the comedian stole Judd Apatow's 2009 flick Funny People with his portrayal of potty-mouth standup Raaaaaaaandy), this year's MMAs are pumping up the volume on social media. First rolled out for last September's Video Music Awards, version 2.0 of MTV's Twitter Visualization platform will allow viewers to monitor tweet activity related to the telecast and the individual performers. For example, should singing pinup girl Katy Perry choose to engage in some particularly outrageous on-screen behavior with her oversexed Brit BF Russell Brand, the site's graphic interface would reflect the concomitant surge in Perry/Brand-targeted discourse.

While memorable moments aren't always planned (see Kanye West's ill-advised cameo during last year's VMAs), fans generally don't have to wait long for the first OMFG moment. "A quick strike is critical," said Stephen Friedman, gm, MTV. "Last year we saw an immediate uptick in Twitter activity after the BrĂ¼no moment, and that informed the rest of the night. Our audience is always looking for that galvanizing moment."

As viewers LOL'd over the seemingly unrehearsed meeting between Sacha Baron Cohen's unswaddled rump and Eminem's scowling mug, ratings soared. Viewers 12-34 were up 92 percent versus the 2008 show and total viewers improved 78 percent to 5.28 million.

"Social media is the telephone and we're the conversation," said Dan Lovinger, svp, MTV sales and integrated marketing. "Not only do we translate the conversation for our clients, but we're also finding new ways to leverage these social media tools to further engage with our viewers."

Seth Meyers interviews Aubrey Plaza (and the rest of the Parks and Rec staff)

Here are the Aubrey excerpts from a panel interview...

Our big emotional cliffhanger in the finale is April and Andy, which was never a combination that we imagined and it came out accidentally," explained [Michal] Shur, [series creator]. "We had the hunting trip episode and we just left them in a room by them selves for a little C-story and then the two of them seemed like that was pretty good so we just thought we would roll with that. It's really because of Chris and Aubrey that it's still incorporated into the show."

"I was a Parks and Recreation nerd to begin with so this has been exciting to come into this world and everyone has been really nice to us ... except for Aubrey," laughed [Adam] Scott. "Yeah well that's kind of her bread & butter," said [Seth] Meyers.

Finally, still obsessed with Plaza and her sarcastic attitude, Meyers inquired about the recent perfect casting of April's sister on the show. "She's actually the daughter of someone in our art department and I guess they cast her because they thought she looked like me," said Plaza. "The scene was that Ron says, Oh you must be April's sister, it's nice to meet you. Then he goes to shake her hand and she rolls her eyes and walks away," explained Schur. "So the audition tapes were just girl after girl rolling her eyes and then walking out of frame. When we got to her, I didn't know that she was related to anyone on the staff, I just knew that she shot the same horrifying chill up my spine that Aubrey does," laughed Schur. "I have two sisters and one is named Natalie, which is probably how April's sister got that name because I used my real sister's name during an improv the first season," explained Plaza. "So she kind of looks like my real sister ... but my real sister is pissed that they didn't cast her."

Is the Parks and Rec cast really okay with the midseason move?

If you haven't heard, Parks and Rec got picked up for a third season, but it got shifted to start in the spring,

I bolded the parts below which suggest that the cast is not really okay with it (they're just coping and hoping)...

Before you go feeling all sorry for the Parks and Recreation gang's scheduling setback, heed our advice...don't. Because we think a brilliant little bald man by the name of George Costanza put it best: "Stuff your sorrys in a sack." (Are Seinfeld references outdated? No way!)

Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman and the rest of the cast is doing just fine, and asks one thing of you—tune into tonight's high-larious finale, will ya?

"We really believe in NBC's promise that they're going to find a good home for us," Amy tells us, as sweet as always. "We're really excited about the season we've had and the show's we've shot. I've very confident we're going to find a good home."

"As long as we are still coming to work and there are sandwiches, I'm OK," says Nick, aka Ron Swanson incarnate. Adds Aziz: "It's obviously not ideal. All we can control is making the show and making it great, and we're coming through on that end."

That doesn't meant the P-Rex crew doesn't appreciate the fan support. "Apparently, there's a bit of a public outrage taking place. It makes us feel good," Nick tells us. The ridiculously funny Chris Pratt (Andy) adds: "We've got a lot of great fans. You go to work and you do your best and hopefully enough people watch it."

And in case you didn't know it, the guy is ambitious. "I know this is a long shot," says Chris, "but I'd like to do Parks and Recreation for a hundred seasons." A totally reasonable goal.

Not to rain on any new NBC sitcom parades, but Nick thinks maybe fans of Pawnee won't have to wait very long. "We're shooting six episodes that were meant to be in the fall and might still be. You never know how TV plays out." Either way, Aziz knows we'll love what we see. "People are going to be psyched over the new episodes. It's the best stuff we've done, and I'm excited to come back whenever we do."

We were lucky enough to see tonight's season-ender, "Freddy Spaghetti," and the cast is not steering you wrong. In fact, after watching the finale, the idea of having to wait a minimum of six months before we get to see if Adam Scott's Ben and Leslie Knope get together, or what will be between Andy and April (Aubrey Plaza, who tells us things between the two "come to a head" tonight.") is a little gut-wrenching. But we digress.

"Leslie goes into the summer in season two not knowing if she has a job," explains Amy. "It's really fun because Adam and Rob Lowe play guys that come in and freeze our money." [Editor's note: Rob is the finale standout!]

And as for good ol' Ron, Nick only has this to say of his season-two sendoff: "He is going out and down with a bang." Boo-yah!
